Cessna 152 lands on New Jersey Turnpike

by Matthew Stibbe on February 2, 2010

A Cessna 152 made a forced landing on the freeway. Nobody was hurt. It looks like a good call compared to landing in the trees nearby. Apparently drivers were not impressed at being cut up by a light aircraft or by the additional delays the clear-up caused. “Hey, I’m driving here.”

You can see a video clip and an interview with the pilot on YouTube.

Amazing story. Which illustrates yet another benefit of high-wing airplanes: if you land on the hard shoulder and your left wing extends across the lane, cars who might not have seen the airplane can go under the wing.

Looks like he landed with the traffic flow as opposed to against it, which is a hard call. Against the traffic makes the aircraft more visible to car drivers, but makes for a nasty crash if a car can’t avoid the airplane. Landing with the traffic means an impact with a car would carry less energy, but which driver checks his rear-view mirror for airplanes?
