Goodbye FIS,RIS, RAS

by Matthew Stibbe on October 20, 2008

Air traffic controllers in front of screen From March 12th next year, the familiar Flight Information Service, Radar Information Service and Radar Advisory Service will be replaced by Basic, Traffic and Deconfliction services. The date should be easy for everyone to remember – it’s my birthday! There are subtle differences between the old and the new services and I suspect that the main area of change is legal rather than practical. However, the CAA have published a new document outlining the services and the change to RT procedures. Here it is.

You forgot to mention the ‘Procedural’ service… I personally think that the responsibilities of the parties in the services involved should be well understood by GA pilots and appropriate service obtained for safe flight.

I find too many GA pilots often do not know/understand the services and hesitate to ‘upgrade’ the service, often compromising flight safety for themselves, crew, pax and other flights.

The interactive guide for the new ATSOCAS services can be found here (http://airspacesafety.com/ATSOCAS_web/) and is more ‘readable’ than the CAP774 – However it is not a substitute for the CAP. Downloadable versions can also be found on the AirspaceSafety website.
