John Ewing of Aviation Mentor has recently written a blog post where he mentions several very useful tools for pilots that he has reviewed in the past along with recent product updates for these tools. These useful pilot tools include:
- Nacomatic. Doug Rantz has made some bookmark changes to his approach plate PDF files which should help users more easily locate airports when they don’t know the airport’s identifier. This change is useful for any pilot using the Kindle DX.
- Ground School Workbook for Private Pilots. According to John, Dan Dyer’s workbook is an invaluable tool for would-be private pilots who need a paper-based enhancement to self-paced study.
- SkyCharts. Developer Heikki Julkunen has added a variety of new features to SkyCharts, including support for VFR Terminal Area Charts and IFR low-altitude en route charts. The price is only US$10.
- ReadyProcs. Doug Moreland has made some user interface enhancements to his application for viewing approach charts and airport facility information.
- PFMA. This is John’s favorite iPhone E6B calculator as its easy to use. The most recent update allows users to set a variety of preference items and the cost is only US$6.
- LightSpeed Mach1. This is John’s preferred headset and he has been using it for four years now. He also noted that: “The Mach1 is lightweight, has excellent sound quality, doesn’t require regular battery replacement, and allows me to wear a hat or cap to protect my balding pate from sunlight.”
John also noted that while some of these products are for sale, others are offered for free but with the suggestion that you should donate some cash to help the developer out. Hence and if you find such tools useful, please don’t forget to donate something.
