RyanAir charging for lavs

by John on March 12, 2009

Bloggers were in a frenzy when the sometimes wacky CEO of RyanAir announced in a BBC interview (click here to see the interview) that his airline may charge passengers to use toilets on their planes. The FP Posted reported the story under the headline “Pay toilet policy to help keep Ryanair flush with cash.” while the Vagablond blog posted a picture of a coin slot under the headline “Pay to pee.”

Michael O'Leary Meanwhile, Dankoozy’s Blog was even more tongue and cheek and suggests that they instead add a €10 toilet non-use charge to every ticket with a minimum volume requirement to prevent fraud while PlasticPilot sarcastically suggests several other items that RyanAir could charge for, including life jackets (“surchage if an emergency is declared”), stairs for boarding (“surcharge for handrail”) and oxygen masks (“surchage in case of drop in cabin pressure”).

CrankyFlier on the other hand takes a more serious approach under the headline “Forget Charging for Lavs, Ryanair Is Eliminating Ticket Counters at Airports” and concludes that:

It’s basically going to be like a bus now, except they’ll frisk you before you get to the door and you can’t pay your fare onboard. But like the bus, nobody will be around to help you figure things out beforehand. You’ll just have to be good at getting around on your own. If you aren’t, well, Ryanair will probably tell you to fly someone else.
