Flight simulators are among the most popular computer games on the market today and can even be a useful training tool for both current and would-be pilots. And of course they can also be plenty of fun to play! However, the sheer number of flight simulator options on the market today can overwhelm would-be buyers and not to mention their prices range from free to well over US$20,000.
Hence, a recent post on the Aviation News – Planegrazy blog is well worth reading as the post gives the lowdown on flight simulators that may meet or break your budget. These simulators include:
- Free. Flight Gear is the most popular free simulator available on the internet today. The simulator attempts to mimic Microsoft’s Flight Simulator but pilots will find the flying experience to be somewhat limited. However, there are over 20,000 airports to choose from that are modeled off of existing airports. Flight Gear will also work on a variety of operating systems including Linux and Mac OS X.
- Combat. Microsoft’s Combat Flight Simulator 3 clearly stands above the crowded playing field of combat simulators and allows the user to fly combat missions in different aircraft over 1943 Europe. This particular simulator is well suited for someone looking for an interactive video game that also has a good an ongoing storyline.
- Affordably Priced. Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X Deluxe offers amazing graphics and a realistic flight experience for anyone looking for a no frills flight simulator. It retails for about US$40.00 but the only downside is that it will only run on a Windows platform.
- Advanced/High Cost. Professional-grade flight simulators are the ultimate flight simulators for both experience and cost reasons. Hence they are usually only found at flight schools where they are used by pilots for training purposes.
So if you are looking at purchasing or downloading a flight simulator, be sure to check out some of the ones above mentioned by the Planegrazy blog.

Don’t forget X-plane!
That’s a really good point. X-Plane is a pretty good and it’s remarkable that it’s the product of just one person.
Hi Matthew
About PC Flight Simulators I will add 2 that are missing from you list:
– IL-2 Sturmovik
Probably the best combat simulator ever created (IMHO better than MS Combat Simulator 3)

- X-Plane
it is flight simulator with Windows and Mac OSX versions that is concurrent with MS Flight simulator. It has amazing graphics and a improved flight physics. Also it is an FAA-certified professional flight simulator.

I’ve never played Sturmovik but I have heard great things about it. X-Plane is great. Matthew
