Video: Helicopter trims trees with a giant aerial saw

ABC in the USA has reported that New Jersey Central Power & Light has a new tool to keep tree branches away from power lines: A helicopter equipped with 10 giant blades measuring 25 inches in diameter that spin at 2,400 revolutions a minute.

The aerial tree trimmer is controlled by the helicopter pilot who leans outside to watch its progress. Apparently, the saw is able to turn around, cut from the top down and get a nice clean cut.

After Hurricane Sandy, New Jersey Central Power & Light turned to the aerial tree trimmer to keep tree branches away from transmission lines as its easier to use a helicopter than to bring in several trucks into a confined area.

However and if you are thinking of hiring a helicopter equipped with a giant saw to trim some of your trees, just be aware it will cost you $500 an hour – a real bargain when you consider it’s a safer method to trim trees plus it would take a tree trimming crew two days to do the same amount of work!

They have been doing this in the Midwest U.S. for awhile. They have based out of our small airport at least 4 times over the last 15 months.
