Safer Skies Aviation Training Series: The weather

The FAA has produced a useful series of videos entitled the Safer Skies Aviation Training Series. The series originated from a 1998 initiative which identified the most critical and common causes of most aviation accidents. Identified causes included:

  1. Weather
  2. Aeronautical decision making
  3. Loss of control
  4. Controlled flight into terrain
  5. Survivability
  6. Runway incursions

In the first video of the series, weather is discussed and it was mentioned that 27% of accidents are weather related and fully 90% of weather related accidents originate with bad decision making by the pilot. Hence, the nearly hour long video discusses weather planning and in-flight weather decision-making and is well worth watching.

That kind of video can be terribly dry, is this? I'm thinking I'll save it for after the big Easter meal when I'm feeling lazy. 🙂
